Whether you’re looking to create a business card for yourself or are a graphic designer who intends to create business cards for others, it is crucial to learn where to start.

Is It Important to Stick To a Standard Size Business Card?

With so many software tools available, producing professional-looking business cards has become easier than ever. Yet, there are a few basics that you need to be aware of.

However, before we begin with the technicalities of business cards, let’s discuss first the importance and relevance of business cards especially in this digital world.

Given all the social media accounts and pages we can create to let people know about our business, it is still imperative that we keep and design an effective business card.

As we go on through the discussion, we shall emphasize the importance of learning about the standard size of business cards, as well as how much can they be reasonably manipulated.

Importance of Using Business Cards

Even though we are up in the digital age, it is still necessary to advertise your business both locally and online.

One means of achieving this is through the use of high-quality business cards. This is one of the reasons why business cards remain useful and relevant in the digital age.

While social media platforms have made connecting much easier, a well-designed business card can be a helpful instrument in individual marketing and networking.

Business cards remain the fastest and most accurate method of exchanging information, and the physical engagement of passing them provides significant value when establishing a connection with another person.

Significant advancements in printing technology have resulted in a plethora of eye-catching modern design features. Without uttering a word, the feel, style, weight, and overall aesthetics of a business card can speak volumes about a company’s marketing statement.

Hence, business cards are still important even as the business world evolves digitally.

Relevance of Using Business Cards

Another significant reason why business cards are still an important aspect of promoting your company is that they improve your professional image.

Of course, you must ensure that your cards are of good quality and professionally printed.

You must also ensure that the cards include the correct information. This way, you’ll get the most out of your business cards and be able to use them in conjunction with digital marketing.

Another important thing to remember is the significance of having professional-looking business cards in growing your business. In many cases, your business card will be the first impression people will have of your company.

A dirty, badly designed card will not help you. That’s why you have to make sure that the business cards have a vibrant design.

Moreover, design is not just the most important thing to keep in the business.  You also have to make sure that they contain the most important information too.

This includes your phone number, email address, fax number, and social media account information.

It is also worthy to note that your business card should also be free of unnecessary information.

To make it look clean and professional, maintain the design simple but utilize a striking font and color combination.

Now, as we discuss the technicalities of the features of a business card, let us dive into the importance of taking into account the size of your business card.

It is safe to say that the design of a business card is the most important thing to work on, but keeping up with the standard size which will work best for your business card is something we should not also dismiss.

Standard Business Card Size

The standard dimension for a business card is 3.5 x 2 inches. Chances are a good percentage of the business cards that you’ve ever received have been on these dimensions.

But have you wondered why the business cards are always this size? There are certain benefits of this standard size.

For one, it fits nicely into a standard wallet, purse, and pocket. This is the reason why credit cards, gifts cards, and most licenses are also roughly the same size.

It provides a sense of consistency and recognizability. This is the reason most people and businesses choose to have their cards within these dimensions.

Do Business Cards Always Have to Be the Same Size?

The benefits of having standard size business cards should certainly be taken into account while designing a new business card.

However, there is no official body that regulates the standard business card sizes.

The existing standard size exists due to convenience and tradition. Most business card holders, wallets, and filling devices are also designed to accommodate a standard size business card.

However, a good way to make your business card stand out is by breaking the traditional mold. A business card that is of a different shape or size will most likely catch the eye of its recipient instead of getting lost in the number of same-sized cards.

Yes, there may be an issue with fitting your card into a wallet. However, this isn’t a big issue in the long run. You aren’t really expecting anyone to look at your card every day, are you?

The purpose is to get potential clients and customers curious enough to give you a call. And a card that stands out from the get-go is more likely to get you a call than a card that gets lost in the wallet.

However, if you need your client to have your business card with them at all times, going for a non-traditional size may not be the best idea.

You can, instead, opt for a non-traditional card that may still be inside the wallet if you really want to break the mold.

Conclusion

At the end of the day, there are pros and cons of standard sizes of business card as well as non-traditional business cards.

Therefore, it is necessary to understand the requirements and the purpose of the business card before designing it.

If you’re a graphic designer creating business cards for clients, make sure to run the idea of a non-traditional business card by them. It may help them make a better decision.
