One of the most potentially stressful initiatives you and your family will take up is house remodeling. Making sure you and your family are ready for what comes next and know what to expect can help you feel less stressed. Fortunately, we have a few tips and ideas for getting ready for a home renovation project.

These tips can help you remodel your home in a more organized and stress-free way, which will lessen the amount of inconvenience and worry you have to deal with. You’ll be glad you took the time now to figure out a game plan before you start breaking down those walls. You’ll be able to focus on the big picture: a stunning new kitchen, bathroom, or living room that you love!

Pro Tips

Create and Store Digitally

You don’t have to bring out your art supplies to remodel your home. Pinterest is a good place to narrow down and share idea boards with your family and with people who make things like furniture. You can also use deck design software to virtually see how your house will turn out . This way, you will know exactly where you want those electrical sockets and where the odd ottoman will sit just right.

Make it your mission to do your bookkeeping digitally instead of by hand. Spend a Saturday figuring out how your organization works. Choose a cloud storage service and use your phone to scan and make PDFs of contracts and receipts that you want to keep forever.

Make sure everyone who needs to know what’s going on can see shared spreadsheets and calendars.

Collect First-Hand Information

Before making any major decision, make sure you do your homework on what you want to do and who you want to collaborate with. You might be able to relax if you know where to start, how much it will cost, and how long it will take.

Another way to reduce stress during home renovations is to know what steps your project needs to take. Request a general timeline from your contractor about how things will go in order. Understanding the project stages will give you some peace of mind, even if some things change the flow or the time frame.

Pack Up and Store

Set up a storage solution for everything you want to keep while renovating the room. If you have a spare guest room or a basement, consider renting a temporary storage container or a storage facility to keep your belongings secure and organized.

Make Security System Upgrades

There may be days when your home feels like a circus during a renovation or remodel of any kind. Designers, contractors, and delivery people may come and go all the time. During the time you’re at work or away from home, you might need these people, so make sure they’re safe by adding these security features:

  • To protect your important documents, consider purchasing a safe for your home to keep them secure.
  • A video doorbell is a good way to keep an eye on deliveries while you’re away from home.
  • Install smart locks that can let contractors in for a set amount of time.

Hire Good Help

Consider contractors with experience, NARI membership, a good BBB rating, and client references. Do a background check on the suggested contractor with your state’s consumer protection agency, disciplinary boards, and local courts. Working with a professional remodeling contractor is essential.

Visit their current job site to evaluate their work. This will help you understand the level of expertise. Examine the team’s collaboration and compatibility to see if you can work with the company personally. The best contractors keep clean worksites, take safety procedures, and blend in with their surroundings.

Insist on a Thorough Contract

The contract must include:

  • The right address.
  • A start and end date.
  • A thorough explanation of the work performed.

It would help if you understood the conditions of the renovation contract you are about to sign. A fixed-price contract is the most common type of home remodeling contract; it details the total cost of the job, including permits, building supplies, and labor. This type of contract locks in costs and removes the chance of a future price hike.

Consider the Other Disruptions

  • People who wish to shower while their bathroom is being remodeled can consider joining a gym.
  • Make adjustments to the house so that different entrances are easy to use.
  • Make a safe spot for your pet if they will be alone with workers during the day.
  • Roll up your area rugs around the house to protect them from work boots and dusty air.
  • It’s a good idea to keep extra fitted sheets on hand to cover furniture and keep dust from collecting on couches and chairs.
  • Attach plastic sheeting to the fronts of large open shelving units to protect them. This will prevent dust from accumulating on the shelves.
  • Close the doors to the rooms adjacent to where you’re working to keep dust out.
  • Using your consumables up ahead of time reduces the amount to pack. Call it the “pantry challenge,” “use all your shampoo samples challenge,” or “let’s eat everything in the freezer challenge.”

Conclusion

To the untrained eye, renovating one’s house appears to be an easy and exciting undertaking. That being said, it isn’t exactly easy or exciting. As a result, you’ll need to spend a lot of time and effort thoroughly organizing every aspect of the remodeling process. Keeping these things in mind will help you mentally prepare for the experience.
