Having a massage is one of the most popular ways to unwind.

From reducing muscle tension to increasing joint mobility, the benefits of massage have been proven to have a positive effect on the mind and the body.

If you have an interest in helping people relax, learn how to start a home remedial massage business today with this article.

1) Consider Your Reasons for Wanting to Start a Home Business

Before you begin the process of starting your remedial massage business, you should take a step back and consider your why.

Do you feel like this is something you can see yourself doing for an indefinite time? Do you have the skills required to navigate the business world? Will this be something you’ll be able to pursue even with a 9-to-5 job? Or are you planning to go all-in on this business venture?

Whatever the case, it’s important to have a sound plan before diving into this field. There’s no room for impulsivity to become an entrepreneur; everything has to be calculated, planned, and maintained for a business to succeed.

Also, determine your availability. If you can only run the business on the weekends or late nights, calculate if the expenditures you’re going to be incurring will turn into profit in a reasonable time frame.

2) Research on Permits Before Setting up Shop

Whether you’re registering for a corporation or a home-based business, all businesses should comply with the tax obligations of their respective country.

For Australian citizens, there are several legal obligations you need to meet before opening your business. These are:

  • Tax File Number (TFN)
  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT)
  • Australian business number (ABN)
  • pay as you go withholding (PAYG)

In addition, you may have to consider regional regulations set by your residential, territorial, and state governments. You should also find a public liability insurance coverage plan to protect your business from liability claims.

Once all this is done, you can then proceed to set up shop.

3) Get Certified in Massage Therapy

Contrary to popular belief, getting certified for massage therapy isn’t only about memorizing various massage techniques.

While massage therapists use their hands, elbows, legs, and feet to apply pressure to a patient’s body, there’s a heavy emphasis on gaining knowledge about the effects of the body and overall health too.

Though some may practice massage just for relaxation purposes, some therapists utilize their expertise in treating muscle pain and tension as well.

To ensure you’re ready to serve a variety of clientele, it’s best to enroll in a program like TSA that will formally train you in massage therapy. T

here, you can practice your craft and train under the guidance of professionals in a clinical, hands-on environment.

4) Find a Space at Home to Run Your Business

If you have a spare room in your home, consider setting it up as your business space. You can use this room to meet with clients and as a clinic.

Before you set up shop, however, ensure that the room is spotless; you may require your patients to take off their shoes before stepping onto your massage table or a carpeted area.

Also, make sure that there’s enough space for your equipment so everything is easily accessible. Ideally, you should use a room that’s not prone to loud noise or distractions outside as well.

This way, your patients won’t be interrupted while they’re receiving treatment.

5) Purchase the Essentials for Your Business

Once you’ve found a space to run your massage business, it’s time to invest in essential equipment that will keep your clients happy.

Consider what you need most for your clinic and go get it before fully setting up shop.

The following are some of the essential equipment you’ll need:

  • Unscented lotion
  • Warm lighting
  • Sanitary bags
  • Showerhead (for hydrotherapy treatments)
  • Massage table with adjustable components (for head and height)
  • Oils
  • Linens, sheets, towels, and pillowcases
  • First aid kits

As you run your business and gain more customers, you may feel compelled to add more equipment to your clinic. But for now, those essentials should suffice as you find clients and make a name for yourself as a massage therapist.

6) Hold a Soft Opening First, Then Launch

Once everything’s set up, you may be eager to find customers. But before letting the wider public know about it, you may benefit from having people you trust try your services first.

This way, they can give you valuable feedback about your home-based clinic. This can give you better insights on what to improve before launch.

Once you feel that your home business is ready to be discovered, talk to friends and family members about it.

Then, branch out to members of your community by posting fliers and promoting your business to your associates through word-of-mouth.

7) Set Up a Digital Footprint With Relevant Content

When you’re running a home-based business, it’s best to keep up with the latest strategies and trends in digital marketing.

The first thing you can do is set up your website or GMB profile and use it as a directory for your clinic. Here, potential clients will find all the information about your business, such as your phone number, email, and what exactly you do.

Make sure you upload all the necessary details, such as your location as well.

If you’d rather not build a website from scratch, you can create a Facebook or Instagram page to keep in touch with customers.

With Facebook, you can build an audience and share photos and videos of your happy customers after massage sessions. Interested prospects can see what other people have to say about your company, which provides them more confidence in doing business with you too.

Conclusion

You can also use social media to post updates about promotions or special deals that you’re offering every now and then.

We hope that this guide has given you a head start as you venture into the massage therapy business!
