Let’s start right at the beginning and ask “What is an SEO agency?”

An SEO agency is a company that delivers search engine optimization services for its clients. Their aim is to achieve higher rankings on Google for particular websites that their clients own. Higher rankings mean higher rates of traffic, and more traffic means more opportunity for revenue and profit.

A professional SEO company will look at the current state of play, understand what is needed and where so that the website has the best possible chance of ranking, they’ll create an action plan, and then implement it.

On-Page SEO also covers items such as:

  • Meta Descriptions
  • Page Titles and Headers
  • Language and Tone
  • Natural keyword implementation

Off-Page SEO: Off-Page SEO covers the tasks that an SEO company can complete away from the website itself. This is a harder to define aspect with fewer strict rules to abide by. Generally speaking, a company will look to ensure that your website is being linked to from other reputable websites (backlinks), has a correct hosting setup, runs quickly, and is secure.

Off-Page SEO includes reviews and mentions on third-party sites such as Google My Business, social media pages, and local citations.

The tech-savvy amongst us will note that a few of the items mentioned in the above list come under Technical SEO, but these items can be rolled into Off-Page SEO for the sake of ease.

Market And Competitor Research: This should, arguably, be the first thing on any SEO agency’s agenda. They should ask you questions about your target market, sound out general feelings about how the market is and dig into your competitors.

Looking at your competition gives you a good indication of how difficult it will be to rank as well as giving some good indications of what Google is looking favorably on in your particular industry.

As mentioned above, SEO is something of a constantly evolving industry. The very best SEO companies will be willing to innovate and try new things, putting them at the cutting edge of industry standards. Remember that if a company is trying the same things that worked 5, 2, or even 1 year ago, you’re unlikely to outrank an innovative company.
