The key to running a productive and efficient business lies within your workforce. When your employees are healthy and happy, they can work to the highest standard and with added enthusiasm. Ideally, your employees will look forward to coming to work and enjoy their time there.

How to Keep Employees Healthy and Happy in the Workplace

If you struggle with motivating your team or want to encourage your employees to lead a healthy lifestyle and look forward to coming into the office, keep reading… this is the article for you!

Conduct a Survey

Before you can work to make the office a better place, you need to evaluate which areas are not performing to their fullest potential. Are your employees happy with their work-life balance?

Do they feel like they have enough time for their family? These are essential questions you need the answers to, especially if you hope to make a real impact in the workplace.

The most effective way to learn about the downfalls of your office is by creating a survey and asking your employees to fill it out. If you want your staff to be as honest and transparent with their answers as possible, you’ll want to offer them complete anonymity.

You can either choose to create your own survey or look for a pre-existing one online. Some questions that you can ask your employees include:

  • Do you feel connected to your colleagues?
  • Do you feel valued at work for your contributions?
  • Do you find your work meaningful and motivating?
  • Do you find you have all the necessary resources to do your job effectively?

Keep The Office Clean

An organized office reduces distractions and keeps procedures streamlined. Set your employees some daily cleaning tasks or hire some external help to keep the workplace nice and tidy.

Apart from boosting productivity levels, having a clean office can help reduce the likelihood of an accident.

Keeping the office clean isn’t as difficult as it seems. Make certain cleaning tasks a daily habit and keep others as weekly or even monthly activities. If you’re not sure how to create your office cleaning schedule, here are a few essential tasks to consider.

  • All trash cans should be emptied on a daily basis
  • Surfaces should be wiped down and floors should vacuum on a daily basis
  • Windowsills and doors should be cleaned on a weekly basis
  • Office telephones and chairs should be disinfected on a weekly basis
  • Office furniture and wooden floors should be polished on a monthly basis
  • Communal fridge and office supplies should be cleaned out and re-organized on a monthly basis

Train Up Your Staff

If you invest time, money, and effort towards training your staff, they will ultimately feel more valued and capable at work. Not only will your employees feel more productive and efficient with the correct training, but they won’t require as much support when conducting day-to-day tasks.

Training doesn’t have to be extremely expensive or time-consuming. It can be as simple as an informal introduction day that helps them get to grips with the basics of the role. Other examples of training include

  • E-learning and online courses
  • External conferences or lectures
  • Instructor-led training
  • Health and safety videos
  • Job shadowing

If you work with any dangerous equipment, you’ll also want to ensure all staff is fully trained as refusing to do so could cause a serious life-threatening injury.

Similarly, when operating with heavy and dangerous machinery, you should provide your staff with all the necessary safety equipment.

Keeping your office clean your staff trained are two easy ways to avoid any accidents from occurring.

However, if an accident does occur, you should always contact a personal injury attorney to help you deal with the incident.

Organize Team Challenges

Team building is an effective way to manage your team and encourage them to work together. A stronger unit of employees will inherently encourage collaboration, increase trust, and boost productivity levels.

You can choose a manager to lead the team building activities or adversely hire someone externally to come in and help improve relations amongst colleagues. Some great examples of in-office team building include

  • Organize a show and tell
  • Play a board game during lunch
  • Create a scavenger hunt
  • Play an escape-the-room challenge

Team challenges aren’t always related to work, sometimes you can achieve the same results with out-of-office activities.

Many offices like to organize after-work drinks; however, this leaves non-drinkers feeling left out of the activity. It’s important to expand your company’s horizons and include a wide range of team-building activities that all members of staff can get involved in.

  • Sports day tournament
  • Trivia or bingo night
  • Charity work and volunteering
  • Office book club
  • Group cooking class

Appreciate Your Employees

At the end of the day, you can measure success, organize team challenges, keep a clean office, and train up your staff, but unless you appreciate their work, all of your efforts will be for nothing.

It’s extremely important to express your gratitude as this can motivate your employees to continue the hard work.

Showing your employees that you value them, allows them to engage more with their role, motivates them to do better work, and overall, improves staff loyalty. Other than simply saying ‘thank you, there are many other ways you can show your employees your appreciation, such as

  • Offering flexible workdays to all staff
  • Creating an employee of the month award
  • Sending out personalized holiday cards or gifts
  • Treating colleagues to a meal
  • Asking employees for feedback
  • Giving extra time off and yearly bonuses

Having a happy team of employees is the secret to corporate success. Without a great team behind you, it’s unlikely that you will get very far. When employees are dissatisfied, offices experience more sick days and absences.

Contrastingly, when workers are happy with their job, they provide more innovative solutions and a higher standard of work overall.

Research has also shown that a happy and engaged group of staff also reduces the possibility of a workplace accident by 50%.

Fewer accidents mean more productivity and a higher success rate for the company. Therefore, keeping your employees satisfied is the key to a healthy business.

Make sure to create a favorable work environment and let your employees know how much you value them. Remember you’re only as strong as the weakest member of your team, so make sure to take care of everyone on the payroll.
