So, you’ve got a great idea for a business, and now you need a killer name to go with it. This step may seem nominal, but your brand’s name plays a vital role in your company’s success.

How to Choose a Good Brand Name

This is because your business’ name is generally the first thing people learn about your business. Therefore, it needs to be unique and memorable, and it should resonate with your target audience.

This is a tall order, especially when you consider that there are hundreds of thousands of companies already in existence. Consequently, you need a name that no one else is using.

What Does a Good Brand Name Consist Of?

There is no magic formula when it comes to creating a good brand name. However, there are a few things that make a business name stand out. Essentially, you want a name that:

  • Communicates the essence of your brand, creates an image of who you are, and builds a positive emotional connection.
  • If unique and memorable, you should be easily identifiable from your competitors.
  • Can be easily spoken and spelled.
  • Remains relevant over the years and can be adapted for different products and brand extensions.

 Consider What Makes You Different

Before you can develop a good brand name, you first have to consider who you are as a company and what you’re trying to achieve. So, ask yourself the following:

  • What is your purpose? Why does your business exist?
  • How will your company affect the future?
  • What does your brand do, and how will it help create the future you envision?
  • What values guide your business?

After you’ve answered these questions, you’ll have a good understanding of what makes your brand unique. However, there are other things about your company that differentiate it from other businesses.

When coming up with a brand name, you should keep these differentiators in mind. For example, if what sets your company apart is your green initiatives, you might consider using the words Green in your name.

 Get to Brainstorming

Now that you’ve thought about the essence of your brand and what makes you unique, it’s time to start coming up with ideas. However, don’t just go wild and write down every thought that comes into your head. Instead, we recommend doing the following:

  • Start by writing down all the adjectives related to your product or service.
  • Next, come up with words or phrases that describe how you want your customers to feel when they use your product or service.
  • Finally, free associate words to your product or service.

If after this exercise, you haven’t come up with something you like, you might want to try some of these ideas:

  • Using the name of a real or fictional person.
  • Fabricating a made-up name or word.
  • Using a descriptive moniker of your products or services.
  • Creating an acronym.
  • Combining two words into one.
  • Employing a metaphorical word or phrase.

Pick your favorite options and create a list. Then check the availability of the names on this list.
