A web design business is a service company. However, did you know that running such a company does not mean that you have to sell your products as service products? Some web design companies use power from product marketing to build their businesses.

Custom services such as the ones provided by web design businesses consume a lot of time. Time is a limited resource. These businesses need to productize their services for them to build a 7-figure web design business effectively.

Service Businesses – Web Design

Unfortunately, the truth is that service businesses such as web design companies are quite difficult to build and grow. For instance, building a web application for a client means that you have to meet that client, learn about what they do, create a winning strategy, and then come up with deliverables.

This means that you spend a lot of time upfront before you can even start working on the final product. Since you are just starting your business and trying to scale, it means that you have limited resources compared to the more established companies.

Keeping that in mind, you will spend more time working with single or countable clients before you can start looking for another client. With such limitations, how can you grow your web design business into a 7-figure business?

Well, let us look at digital products and identify the differences between them and services offered by web design businesses. From there, we will understand how you can scale your web design business with systems and productization.

Why Are Digital Products Easier to Scale?

Digital products are easier to scale compared to services offered by web design companies. This is because;

  • One product can be sold to thousands of people.
  • Time spent on the sale process is minimal since the product price is stated upfront.
  • There are many ways of promoting a product without having to meet with potential customers.

Scaling a Web Design Business

As you can see above, it is easy to build a business dealing in digital products. However, the case is quite different when it comes to service businesses such as web design businesses. That notwithstanding, you can still build a 7-figure web design business with systems and productization. There are three different ways of productization for web design businesses to scale and grow. They include;

  • Monthly Subscriptions
  • One Time Purchases

FITD (Foot In The Door)

This is one of the most ideal productization ways for web design companies that sell customized services and would like to keep on generating revenue while at the same time getting quality leads.

To get started, these businesses need to create a small version of their entire service that will sell. It can be packaged in a way that will convince customers to make purchases. It could be something like an audit, a cheat sheet, an ebook, a guide, or even a video course.

However, it has to be of good quality and convince a customer to invest in the higher service that the business offers. For example, a web design business can have its Magento developers offer a Magento audit at some fee. This can be generated within no time.

After a customer buys the audit, chances are that they will be more likely to purchase other services such as the development of a Magento eCommerce platform.

Monthly Subscriptions

This is one of the most popular models used by businesses today. Most web design businesses that offer SaaS products rely on this model to grow their businesses. It works like a customer retainer model, helping businesses grow.

Instead of having customers buy your services in a one-off payment, they pay on an annual, quarterly, or monthly basis. However, this means that you create products that the customer will need to keep paying for if they want to enjoy its services.

One Time Purchases

This is ideal for web design businesses that offer web development services only. However, this is one of the most difficult ways for you to grow your business, not unless you include add-ons or are established and can penetrate markets with ease.

With one-time purchases, you can always have clients coming back or referring you to other businesses. In case of maintenance, ensure that you have perks that will generate revenue.

Building a 7-figure web design business is not a walk in the park. However, this can be achieved with systems and productization as discussed above.
